Thank you for being ultra considerate of those of us who simply cannot pay for everything we need to read in order to bring informed opinion to the issues of the day. I discovered you because a friend gifted me a NYT subscription years ago. Soon enough, you were one of the few reasons I continued to read it. As more and more of the considered, critical opinion moves to paid platforms, it gets harder for those of limited means to stay informed. So special thanks to you for knowing and acknowledging this and being dedicated to continuing to share your thinking with all of us. That is a great gift and it is deeply appreciated.
Everything you write is worth reading. I’ve been enjoying your posts so much that I began to feel guilty about not paying some amount. You seem to get bees in your bonnet with some regularity; feel free to share whatever the subject.
I'm a paid subscriber simply because I want you to keep writing and I'm happy to support you in that. I don't particularly feel the need to material just for me. I'm happy with a "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" approach.
Branching out, are we? Great! Not a great reader of the weed comment, but know you are one who helps me understand more. Seniors, like myself, have limited resources. Currently, I've subscribed to 4 commentator's, that's my limit. Always look forward to the Free commentary. Thank you for being aware of the fixed income people. We're the people who still read.
I am glad you are leaving some of your posts free. For people living in countries with currencies weak x the dollar, having to pay could be prohibitive. Thanks a lot.
I am new to your efforts here and paid to put money in your tip jar! I am desperately looking for new avenues to engage with what is happening in the world while shutting out the endless and overwhelming Trumpian noise. To that end, I cancelled my New York Times, Washington Post, Atlantic, New Yorker, and cable television subscriptions on November 7th. I just cannot do another four years of dreading the headlines every day and dreading even more the spinning of those same headlines for days. You stood out as a reasonable voice and so was pleased to see that your words are available as a choice to follow. Thank you for that. I will enjoy the bees in your bonnet and happy to be here for the rest. Thank you.
I couldn't understand why, several years ago, Biden said, "Those jobs ain't coming back! So get used to it." I'll never forget that moment.
I could see no reason why then or now. We have the same resources and labor. We're not as educated as a population as we were, but with the will, I don't see why we can't reverse that as well.
Both unpaid and paid subscribers can read my newsletters. I turned on paid hopefully to earn enough to get on the other side of paywalls, so I'm not left out of what I need to know. My social security is less than the average payment, although I worked as an RN for over 30 years and paid for my education. I'll be sure to pay to read what you have to say on the topic.
There are a dozen or so authors on Substack I follow. As a “super-senior, 80+ years old” I would ask for consideration of a discounted subscription rate. Perhaps there is a way to send this request up the chain so that it can be included in all subscriber offers. Your work has been important to me for decades, and will certainly continue to be.
There are many posts on Substack that are worth reading. But paying seven dollars a month for every one of them would be prohibitive, particularly when you’re also a newspaper subscriber. You might do a little calculation to see what percentage of unpaid subscribers might be willing to subscribe at a lower cost point or even consider letting subscribers choose their own price point.
I think you could write a good piece on the causes and effects of the best columnists and opinion writers abandoning "mainstream media" and going freelance on the net. It seems not to have occurred to the owners and editors that this was always an option.
I'm interested in his bailing NYT also. Maybe there's nothing there but it's odd to not even being a occasional contributor to NYT. Didn't John McWhorter move from Substack to be a regular at NYT?
Maybe there's a "non-disparagement clause". Those seem to be popular.

Amen. Trump and his administration are going to impoverish this nation. We have to be very careful. I am grateful to Mr. Krugman too. 💙

Given today’s political environment, it’s more important than ever to keep knowledgeable progressive voices heard.
70 bucks a year is cheap, dirt cheap, to help keep Professor Krugman’s brain working to keep my brain working, and my spirits lifted.
I’ll pay, Paul Krugman, because I support your work.
This seems a reasonable approach. I'm happy to support the efforts while I have the means

I agree with the previous comments. I’m a paid subscriber because I love your work not because I expect something extra. Don’t knock yourself out!

re jobs: some of it must be due to automation ??
Will this be on the final??

Unpaid subscribers can continue to enjoy the free weekday posts.
??
We know that.

As an economist myself, I have learned more from your NYTimes and substack columns than from all my previous studies.
