Yeah… not much to say today… except maybe this: it’s getting very ugly in America right now.

From the outside looking in: 'getting very ugly''??

It's been pretty ugly for some time now. It's out in the open now but it's been bubbling below the surface for a while.

When the U.S. did nothing after Sandy Hook, I gave up on you.

I know. And two more schoolkids were shot yesterday and that got little coverage. I guess they weren't charismatic enough?

I’m on the other side of the ocean so my vision is limited. Am I correct in understanding that it’s in general the haters that have them?

Let me just say, though, as a blue girl living in the red state of Idaho for 30 years now, there are many fine people (including environmentalists, physicians, Buddhists, and unversity professors) who own guns and enjoy hunting. There are also less affluent folks who eat wild game all winter on an almost-subsistence basis. It is possible to hold in mind two opposing truths at once. I love Idaho. Sometimes I hate Idaho, but I'll be here till I die.

Charlie Manson was charismatic too. Leading people to do evil things usually requires it.

I saw that MSNBC fired Matt Dowd for stating the obvious; Kirk was one of the most divisive figures in the country today. What were they thinking? Any account of Kirk's assassination should begin with a review of his vile political beliefs. After that, sure, talk about the tragedy of his orphaned children and gun violence. To do otherwise is political malfeasance. When Reinhard Heydrich was assassinated during WWII, the commentators didn't begin the news with how his 3 children were orphaned. They began by describing how he was the architect of the final solution.

If the media wants to engage in public grieving, then do it for the children and adults being slaughtered in Gaza. Do it for the children who will be afflicted in preventable diseases because of idiotic vaccination policies of RFK and the religious Right. Do it for the children who will not receive food because of the cancellation of AID. Do it for the animals that will become extinct because of Trump's reckless policy on global climate change.

But don't do it for some self-serving smarmy con-man like Kirk who made millions by being the Right's Goebbel. I would say that today the world is in a better place than it was two days ago.

By the way, it would be instructive for readers to go back and review what Hitler did in response to Heydrich's assassination. The partisans involved were from a village that was important for the German war effort. So Hitler ordered, as a reprisal, that all the members of another village, Lidice, should be summarily executed. and sent off to gas chambers. Listen to what Trump's pardoned criminals like Stuart Rhodes and co-conspirators like Stephen Miller are saying.

I want to thank you for your wonderful column and interviews. I know you must receive reams of compliments, but I really feel I need to add one more to that. It's an apocryphal story. I gift subscribed your column to her. She grew up watching "7 days in May", and "Inherent the Wind." and, like me, attended UCLA and Berkeley during the "war times". So she is upset by what's happening in the country. I told her to read your columns carefully and religiously as if she were prepping for her Phd exam in math. If she did, I promised her, as happened to me, she would better understand what was occurring in the world and that would make her calmer and more focused.

Well, she just called me. She thanked me profusely and said that, although initially she simply breezed through them (to placate me ), in the last two weeks she finds that she is not only is reading them carefully, but she is using the ideas and models that you present to better understand where things are and where there might go. And that has not only made her immensely calmer, but given her a sense of power. Things can be done if you understand what is happening; and you give that understanding!

Please live another 15 years (which is about the time I have left).
