I don't know what other readers think, but i personally am delighted to read Krugman on substack. His opinions and writing are definitely now more accessible, inclusive, and comprehensive. So, congrats on a good decision, Paul.

I think its good but I would like to see some longer posts maybe about less current, more broadly applicable topics once all this trump stuff dies down (if it does). I also think the bias is pretty clear in his writing

Noah, I’d like to Apologize. I once wrote on the Bulwark that I thought you were a know nothing blow hard; you blocked me, rightfully so. I am apologizing because I confused you with Noah Rothman; I honestly thought you were him; I’m not apologizing for my thoughts about him though; can you blame me?

That said, my deepest apologies and honestly, I tried to delete the comment minutes after I wrote it, but it was deleted and I was blocked before I can could do so..

So again, my sincerest apologies as I wish you much success with your newsletter.

So…Noah Rothman must have blocked you.

He was correct. I was out of line, and I didn’t even mean to insult him…:)

Noah, you said Arnold Palmer: it's Alexander Mitchell Palmer who did the raids.

Chevy makes the Trax for $20k which seems like a bargain to me. But supply chains are still messed up, in the last 6 months I had an AC issue and then a furnace issue and both replacement parts cost $1k and had to be ordered and the HVAC techs were apologizing the entire time saying things were still not back to normal. And the techs weren’t that old and so maybe they still had parts at the warehouse in 2020 and 2021 and things got worse??

Our macroeconomy is not good. Inequality is terrible. What is really going to get us is financial deregulation and crypto. And it's going to take time. But it will happen.

Expand full comment

Crypto has exacerbated inequality. Crypto is super dumb…even SBF seemed to indicate he was only involved in it so he could become rich like Elon Musk. And he believed Musk was wealthy not because he built a popular EVs but because TSLA was overvalued. SBF wanted high IQ people to be super wealthy so that they could control everything…and one way that happens is with stupid crypto scams and overvalued stock prices.

Great conversation! I am 78 and the current world political environment scares me too, unlike the the late 70's but not so much Trump, rather JD Vance is the political future that scares me. That guy is capable of anything. If I were trump I'd always be looking over my shoulder and would definitely beware of the Ides of March.

He has anti-charisma which is why trump chose him. He does look like a low budget TV character rendition of someone who is unconvincingly evil.

Re. Noah's query to you (Krugman), as an older head, as to the differences in "conservative" politics and practice in the USA over the decades, offering that he felt less threatened by the current brand conservatives than he imagined those of the past would have been.

My own observation as an 82-yr old, World War baby, is that there is, in fact, no meaningful difference and no less threat. So-called conservatives now, as before, remain the same in precept and practice, as ever, like Charles Lindbergh, Father Coughlin, Roy Cohen, John Birch, Kochs, Trump, Vance, et al, antidemocratic, selfish and mean-spirited. To hear anyone of them is to have heard them all. "Me! me me."

Mr Krugman, just a reminder that we are so grateful for the work you are doing, for keeping your and our eyes wide open in these times when society feels abandoned by our institutions, who progressively compromise their values and integrity. It’s a relief to be able to trust a source. Thank you for sharing your common sense and for the hard work behind your well researched essays. It must be also exhausting to be constantly facing this insanity. So please take good care of your physical and mental health and keep your spirit uplifted!

Your work is an important legacy.

Paul, I was not with you live, but I just finished watching the recording. Thank you for making that available. I also want to tell you how much I appreciate seeing you in videos since you left the NYT, seeing you in action warms my heart. You do not present as an entitled person, instead you are authentic and speak the truth. I'm so glad you are having fun!

I think the difference between this administration and previous ones is how blatant the corruption is and how blatant the smashing of norms are. Yes Regan has his Iran Contra scandal and Bush and Obama’s drone strikes on counties we were not officially at war with were definitely questionable but Donald trump & administration is another level or ten above all of that. I’m only a few years younger than Paul so I have adult memories of these events.

As to how bad Trump's nominees are: the worst are Defence, FBI, Intelligence. Just what you would need to allow a dictator. This is not a game.
