The authoritarian movement is being fed by concentrated wealth that seeks to protect its interests. The true failure is our leaders inability or unwillingness to confront this.

Since I get to rub up against a lot of these "economically left behind" folks, the things I see that drives their politics include racism, of course, but also the recognition that they're being taken advantage of by the billionaire/big business class. They KNOW that people like Musk and Bezos are getting ever-more-wealthy at the expensive of people like themselves. But there is no way for them to correct that situation.

So, the bottled up frustrations get turned to voting for authoritarians who can divert that growing anger to other, more-helpless targets. The racism plays right into this, but so does the bleating about eliminating DEI because it gives others "unfair advantages." In effect, it makes all these disaffected voters eager to buy into crab-bucket politics, and the neo-Nazis thrive under those conditions.
