I'm very sorry to confirm for American friends here that, as far as Canada and Canadians are concerned, the longstanding and taken for granted friendship is over. We are quietly and swiftly making other accommodations, most notably in trade and security, by moving ever-closer to the EU, which, frankly, culturally and socially speaking, is a much more natural ally now than the United States.

And that should really hit home.
